Uni 2: Electric Boogaloo (AKA where to order sea urchins)

Posted under Food Items & General Information & Tips and How To's

Faithful reader, Hayato, has asked me where to order sea urchins, so I thought I’d post that information for all to see. While the company I got mine from isn’t around anymore (online at least) I have found another place for them. Since you are on the west coast anyway, Hayato, Catalina Offshore Products has sea urchins here and while I have never ordered from them, I’ve heard good things about them and they are on my list for my next sushi party. You can order both Uni and live urchins. Good luck and let me know how it turns out!

    Warren,
I was about to order the fresh uni, but the shipping cost totally made me hesitate to order. I may try it some other time.

    Order Subtotal: $16.00
    Order Discount: - $0.80
FedEx Standard Overnight (USA Only): $28.99
    Small Order Fee $7.50
    Grand Total: $51.69

Yep, shipping live critters overnight is expensive, I feel your pain, but I always felt that it was sometimes worth it. You might want to ask you local fishmonger if they have access to live urchins, though, you never know.

You know, you’re totally encouraging me to go for the uni tray. I was very happy to see $16 for two trays of uni. But when the price jumps up to more than $50 because of shipping, it was some disappointment. Then again, if you really love uni, you’d go for it right? I’ll probably try sometime next month. I wish I could share the uni with you. None of my friends at work eat raw stuff, so I won’t be able to share it.

That reminds me… when I went to Kaiten Sushi, I ordered uni. Last time I ordered it, it was soooo good. That’s when I said, “Nihonjin ni umarete yokatta!” meaning “I’m glad I was born to be Japanese.” although you can certainly enjoy uni even if you are not Japanese.

My search for good sushi has been continuing since I came to this country. I don’t think it’s going to ever end! LOL

I went to Katen sushi yesterday with my wife and son craving for fresh uni as we talked about it a lot. I ordered two uni there, but it wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. Hmm… too bad. It makes me want to really order the fresh one…

I know, it’s no fun when you get excited for some good uni or hamachi and when you get there it’s only so-so. There’s not much worse than being disappointed when going out for sushi.

As my journey for fresh uni continues, I went to a Sushi Boy (Sushi chain in California) in Torrance. I ordered a tray of sushi that includes uni hoping that they have fresh uni. Well, it was pretty bad. I don’t mean to discriminate, but seeing Mexican people who don’t know about sushi make sushi reduces half my appetite. Plus, rice (shari) part is huge. I’m not going there again. I really should order the uni from the website you found for me.
